It is now official, the oil spill has now impacted every gulf coast state. Tarballs found on Sunday in Galveston, TX were confirmed to be from the Gulf oil spill, according to the US Coast Guard. Around 5 gallons of tarballs were found on Crystal Beach covering around 1.5 miles of beach. Tarballs found on Saturday ranged from the size of a dime to a golf ball.

Authorities estimate 15 gallons of tar balls have been collected since Sunday. However, this is a small amount, as normally tarballs are found even without an oil spill. The problem is what will occur in the future, as more and more oil comes from the spill. Authorities do not believe the oil spill will come directly to Galveston or anywhere in Texas, however the impact will be felt with increased tarballs for the foreseeable future. BP says they will pay for the cleanup, which estimates to be around $40,000 for Galveston, however this will be a moot point if BP goes bankrupt, which in the end is likely.

If you live on the Gulf Coast, this is your future. Expect tarballs for years. With the spill increasing everyday, it could take decades to clean everything up. As someone who lives near the Gulf Coast, I am not pleased.

Update

The tarballs have been found to not be from the BP Oil Spill. The tarballs are from other events, like oil leaking from the sea floor or from the Ixtoc I explosion in 1979. To date, no tarballs found in Texas have been from the oil spill, leaving the 20 million cleanup fund intact.

Admittedly, I don’t know much about these things, but what has happened is so very terrible and profoundly sad. The loss of lives of the oil workers, the loss of the livelihood of so many people and also to watch those beautiful seabirds on the TV coated in oil and dying through suffocation.
