When running Microsoft Outlook, at times your data folder where all your outlook data is kept can develop errors. These errors can result in the inability to send or receive mail. To compound the problem, you may not be able to delete mail. Below is the error message you will likely receive if you are experiencing this problem.

Outlook 2007 Receiving’ reported error (0×80040600) : ‘Unknown Error 0×80040600′

If this occurs while you try to send or receive mail, you need to scan your personal mail folder for errors and correct them. To do so, you need a program called scanpst.exe. In Windows 7, the location of this program is different then under other versions of windows.

First, you need to make sure you can see hidden files and folders. To do so, go to the control panel, then to Folder Options. Now, click the View tab, and under Hidden files and folders, choose the Show hidden files, folders and drives radio button. Now, you will be able to see all the hidden files on your system. Warning: This means you can see files that are critical to the operating of your Operating System. If you delete or move a critical file, you could damage your OS, possibly causing a re-installation of Windows.

Now, you need to find the location of your Outlook Data Folders. They are usually located here:

“C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook.”

You will usually see a file called Outlook there. There may be more files there if you have created more then one data folder, usually if you have more then one e-mail address. Remember the name of the file you want; it will match the account you are receiving the errors with.

Now, time to find scanpst.exe. It is usually located below:

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12″

Make sure Outlook is closed before you continue. Now, double click on scanpst.exe, and a small box will appear. Click the browse button and choose the data folder you wish to repair. It should automatically take you to the folder where all your Outlook data files are kept. If now, navigate to the following directory: “C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook.”

Once you have chosen the data file, click the Start button. The program will scan the datafile for errors. Once done, click the Make backup of scanned file before repairing checkbox, then click the Repair Button. Once done, the file should be repaired. Close the program and go to Outlook, and try to send and receive mail. If it worked, your problem is solved. If not, try again and make sure you choose the correct data file. If it still is broken, check the Microsoft forums for a solution.
