obama President Obamas Health Care Speech: Pay Attention

This evening President Obama will make a prime time speech concerning the current state of governmental run health care reform. One can assume Obama’s job will be to convince Americans that health care reform is an urgent requirement that cannot be ignored. While this will most likely include tactics to sell the plan, there are numerous questions that need to be answered. With his speech running around the 35 minute mark, I think we all need to be mindful of the following questions Obama needs to answer tonight.

First, how would a governmental plan be created. How long would it take to design a plan that can cover the estimated 40+ million Americans without current health insurance? How would these people be entered into the system? Would groups of people be entered at specific times as to not stress demand? How would we create new doctors and health care staff to meet this new influx, and how long would it take to create them?

What services will be offered under the governmental plan? Will it also include mental health services? Can a patent request second opinions, or better yet, choose his own doctor?

Will there be waiting lists for treatment, and if so, how long will they be? What areas of medicine can we expect the governmental plan to succeed most in, and what are the weak areas? Will certain procedures be rare, and if so, how likely is treatment?

What will happen to the prescription drug companies under governmental run health care? Will the government take them over, or impose new laws and regulations. If so, how will this effect drug research? How much will it cost to obtain medications?

Will private insurance be allowed? If private insurance is allowed, what it to ensure it will not die months after this plan goes into effect? If private insurance dies, will governmental health care be the only choice? Will people be fined for not having health insurance?

How will we pay for this plan? Who will pay, and what type of tax increase? Will money be taken from other programs, and if so, which ones? Specific numbers are required here.

This is just a very small list of questions we need answers to. No matter what side you are on, you require information to determine a rational decision. President Obama has many questions he needs to address, he better take the time tonight to answer as many questions as possible, and stick with those answers in the future, or this health care debate could end.
