The Steve Wilkos Show is an interesting site to behold. It is one of those shows that is difficult to classify. The Steve Wilkos show is a talk show which focuses on the scum of society. Steve brings pimps, drug users, murders, and gang members to his show, then proceeds to rip them apart in front of his live audience. The people on his show deserve the harsh treatment, as they represent what is wrong with America. While this at times is exiting to watch, it is also a guilty pleasure, especially when Steve’s audience, we will call the mob, gets active.
Steve is no stranger to talk shows. He originated on the Jerry Spinger show as a bouncer. After the show left the air, Steve returned with his own show, themed at the darker side of society. Steve has experience with problematic people, as he was once a police officer. At times the show is difficult to watch, as the people on the show can hardly be classified as people. Some of the more difficult shows include: giving drugs to babies, rape of small children and the murder of children. It is hard to watch, as these stories are presented as real.
At times it is often difficult to believe this show is 100% real. The stories are so bizarre, so evil, that one wishes these stories were not real. It is hard to believe such evil people would exist, and accept abuse on Steve’s show for a plane ticket and the spotlight. I am not sure if the show is real, but it cannot be ignored. What is really disturbing is what occurs when the mob gets involved. At specific times, usually when something “shocking” occurs, the mob claps, yells, shouts, and hoots. Frankly it is annoying, and feels more like a college frat party. At home, it is easy to dismiss the mob, believing it is designed to respond in this manor. However, if one were present in Steve’s audience, would we respond as the mob responds? Would we go with the crowd and yell as drug dealers lie on their lie detector tests, or would we sit there in a civilized manor?
To admit, this is over-dramatic, as the mob is not hurting anyone or yelling for the death of others. However, it is a central component of Steve’s show, which is common to many talk shows. To me, the use of the mob cheapens Steve’s show, as the issues he covers are very serious. However, the show’s main focus is to make money, as such, mobs in these shows are common, so common people easily identify with them.
Steve does appear to care, and appears to work to help the victims of his show. He often has his clients enter rehab if they choose. This is why this show is so confusing to label. Does it help society or hurt it? By watching these scum bags on his show, do we glorify their behavior or condemn it?
How do you feel about Steve Wilkos’s show? Do you feel the show is a positive, or a negative to society? I frankly cannot tell, as at times it feels like both.
