george Meet George, the Hypnotherapist

To the right you will see George, a licensed Hypnotherapist. No, really, George is a Hypnotherapist. Just look at his eyes, the way they gaze back at you, pulling you in. With just a movement with his paw, you are under his control. He will make sure to help cure you of any unconscious material, as he is fully qualified. At least, according to the British Board of Neuro Linguistic Programming (BBNLP), the United Fellowship of Hypnotherapists (UFH) and the Professional Hypnotherapy Practitioner Association (PHPA).

To state the plainly obvious, George is a cat. His owner, Chris Jackson registered George with the three organizations mentioned above as a Hypnotherapist. Each organization accepted a certificate from the non-existent Society of Certified Advanced Mind Therapists. In other words, these organizations did not even check to see if the society or its certifications were real.

This is like the state not checking if your therapist graduated from a certified institution, or if a medical board did not check the qualifications of its doctors. This is insane, with is quite clear with the case of George. If George, a cat, can get registered as a Hypnotherapist, who else is running around as a fake Hypnotherapist? While each of these organizations exist within the UK, you can be sure this is not a UK only problem. I imagine this occurs all over the world.

Sure, one can assume one will eventually be caught, but how much damage will they do before then? How many people will be given bogus advice and have their money taken from them? The UHF welcomed the investigation and admitted the mistake, so that is a positive. The PHPA stated they make great effort to ensure every applicant is fully qualified, which in the case of George, is a full out lie. No one checked his credentials.

The BBNLP, on the other hand, wins the worst organization award of the year. They stated they exist only to provide benefits to its members, not to check or certify credentials! In other words, we take anyone and check no one, so include your dog, cat, and bird, they seem not to care. The BBNLP is a organization that mainly lists qualified members to the general public. Well, if you consider a cat to be qualified, that is. If I lived in the UK, I would be sure to never visit these people. This is an organization that needs to be rebuilt or removed, period.

What is the lesson here? Make sure to research any professional you plan to use for services. Ask what programs they are a member of, ask what schools they graduated from. Any professional who is honest and up front will give this information with no problems. If one does not wish to, run real far and real fast. Do your homework on the therapist or professional you wish to use. Do not trust an organization to make this choice for you.
