Hulu: Expect to Pay in 2010

Hulu, one of the Internet’s leading sources for online television shows and movies, plans to begin charging users next year. Hulu allows users to access many television shows and movies, offering high quality content. Hulu has been free to date, with no signup or members fees. Users could go to the site, search for a show and watch episodes for free. However, next year the owners of Hulu will begin to offer a pricing system, placing some of it’s content for paying customers only.

It is currently unclear how the pricing model would work, or how much it would cost. The owners of Hulu see money from this move, which means they will begin to charge next year. I have watched content at Hulu, and felt overall it was a good experience. However, I see many users being very upset at this, and will go elsewhere. On the Internet, most things can be found for free if one looks hard enough, television shows are no exception.

The only way this will work is if Hulu can offer ALL television shows in their service, and if it is a monthly fee opposed to a pay per view model. I can see paying 20-30 bucks a month IF all shows are offered, the day after broadcast, at anytime I want, including all cable shows. This would allow many to cancel their cable subscriptions and just watch Hulu. In the real world, however, this is most likely never to occur, as many cable stations will see this as a direct threat and not allow their content on Hulu. Thus, in my opinion, Hulu’s money making scheme is doomed to failure. If to much content is pay to play, then people will look elsewhere.
