According to Mike Farris, founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association, stated the right for parents to home school their children in Sweden will be revoked. The only exceptions to this will be children with medical exceptions and children of foreign workers with appropriate work visas. Parents wishing to teach their children for religious reasons will be forced to send their children to public school and may face stiff penalties if they refuse. Sweden is adopting the German model, where home schooling is outlawed.
The question is, will this occur here in the US? It is understandable to make sure each child has a chance at a good education, however it is inapproperate to assume a parent cannot provide this education. Many would like to see the government provide all needs of the public, even if it overrides personal choice. To me, a parent has a right to educate their child, as long as the child can pass the standardized tests all public students take. I do not see a need to revoke the right for a parent to educate their child. I fear this will soon come to the US, and that most people will agree with it.
