Those who use the Internet for work or school know the importance of a good web browser. An old and obsolete browser will often run into problems on today’s Internet, leaving a bad user experience. For over a year now, Google Chrome has been available to the public, and has seen much success in it’s short lifespan. Chrome is my main and for the most part, only browser, as it does what I need to do, quickly. Below is a list of reasons I use Chrome, and why I think you should as well.
Security
For the past five or so years, it seems there is a new bug or security hole found weekly in Internet Explorer threating to turn your machine into a virus infected zombie. Other browsers are not immune, as Mozilla’s Firefox has also been plagued with security issues. For the moment, Google Chrome is winning the security battle. This year in Vancouver, the Pwn2Own competition tested hacker’s ability to hack into web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome for cash. For the second year, Google Chrome was unable to be hacked. $10,000 was on the line, and no one was able to hack into Chrome. This tells me that for the most part, I do not need to worry about a hacking attempt within Chrome. I know this trend cannot last forever, but for now, Chrome is the browser to beat in terms of Security.
In addition, Chrome has a nice feature called Incognito. You can open up a new incognito tab or window, which puts the browser into sandbox mode. While in this mode, no information is stored on your machine. Your browsing history, cookies, etc are not kept. This is good if you are visiting sites that you may not be sure are safe, and you do not wish to keep a history of them or to download cookies. This feature is easy to activate and use, making it a prime feature of Google Chrome.
Speed
Google Chrome is one of the fastest browsers out there, especially if you are using javascript. Chrome is very fast, so much so I easily notice a difference when compared to Internet Explorer. Chrome also boots quickly, which is an added bonus. Before Chrome I used Firefox; however now I only use Firefox for website testing, as Chrome is fast, productive, and gives me more time to do what I need.
Interface
At first, Chrome’s interface may be confusing. It is so simple when compared to Internet Explorer and Firefox. There are no huge bookmark bars, no side panels, and no annoying toolbars. Chrome is about speed and efficiency. For me, in about 10 minutes I was used to the design and was able to use the browser easily. With less controls and buttons, there is more space for the content, which is nice of you are not running a real high resolution. Overall, I prefer simple to complex interfaces, which Chrome delivers.
It’s Not Internet Explorer
I hate Internet Explorer. No, I loathe it. It is pure evil that must be destroyed. Why am I so against IE? Well, I am a web designer. IE does not use standard compliant code, meaning a website I make may look one way in IE, and another in Chrome and Firefox. When I create a website, I often have to spend 10-20 hours hacking code to make sure the site looks good in all browsers, all due to IE. With standards compliant browsers like Firefox and Chrome, IE’s market share is slipping fast. This make me very happy. It also forces Microsoft to think about improving IE. IE has improved with version 8, however I still hate it. Google Chrome is just another nail in the coffin of IE, which is another reason to embrace the browser.
What Are You Waiting For?
I suggest downloading Google Chrome and giving it a try. It is free, and is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. With support coming soon for major plugins and extensions, Chrome will grow and improve. For me, Google Chrome is the browser of choice.
