A long time staple of the Internet shuts down tomorrow for good. Geocities, a free online website system, shuts down tomorrow with no intentions to return. All websites being hosted by Geocities will go down, with all data erased forever. Geocities has been around since the beginning of the Internet in 1994, allowing financially challenged individuals free websites. For many, tomorrow will be a dark day.
It was only a matter of time for this to occur. With web hosting as cheep as it is, it just makes no sense to have a site peppered with ads when one can pay 2-3 bucks a month for a webhost. In the past, web hosting was much more expensive, making Geocities a logical alternative. Now days, Geocities sites are often viewed negatively. For those who still have a Geocities site, log in and download all content before midnight, or you will loose your data forever.
The days of free web hosting are close to and end. Angelfire, you are next, I am sure. If you have content on a free host, it is time to think of a paid option, because if this trend continues, you will have little choice. The Internet changes tomorrow, and it may just be a good thing.

Wow…I put my first website up on Geocities back in 1996. It’s crazy to think that it’s actually vanishing.
