The Beginners Guide to Gaining Followers on Twitter

If you are new to twitter you may be searching and seeing people with 5,000, 10,000, and 20,000 followers. You may wonder how people can get so many followers, and how long does it take? Not long ago, one week ago in fact, I asked the same question. I decided to use common sense and see how many followers I could gain in one week. I signed up to twitter over a month ago, but did nothing with it. At the beginning of last Thursday I had 2 followers, and was following 2 people. One week later I have 202 followers and am following 546 people. Below is how I did it.

Search for People with Similar Interests

The first thing to do is search for people you want to follow. To do so, log into twitter and then click the Find People Link. Next, put in a term you like. For example, I was interested in Psychology, so I put that term in the box and clicked the search link. All people interested in Psychology was listed, and I choose to follow those who matched my interests. I did this for multiple things I was interested in, until I had close to 300 people I was following. I decided to stop there and wait to see what happened next.

Note: Twitter does not like this practice, if this is all you intend to do to gain followers. Many people will follow someone who is following them, as a way to say thanks. While this is good, some people have abused this to try to get huge numbers of followers while not contributing anything to twitter. If you do this step, make sure to begin to post, and make sure the posts are meaningful (and not spam).

Post Post and Post

Now that you are following people, people will begin to follow you. If you want to keep them following, make sure to post meaningful information. If your blog is about cats, and you want to focus on cats, then post on cats. Key word is meaningful. I have blocked people because they were posting things that I did not care for. Your followers follow you for a reason, not to hear how you got mad at your girlfriend.

Message Others

If you are noticing conversations, join them. Message others and talk back to them. Start to become known to others, so people notice when you post. This can take time, and I am in the beginning stages of this, but It appears to be sound advice.

Post Often, but Not to Often

If you go for days at a time and do not post, followers will leave. Try to post multiple times a day, but make sure each post is unique (and not spam). On days that I posted often, I got 25-50 new followers a day. On days I did not, I got 10. Make sure not to spam, or others may become angry and unfollow you.

Thank Others for Following You

Send a nice private message stating thanks. It can go a long way, just do not spam the message. Be nice and try to make friends. Remember, you get further with a nice word then with the stick.

So far these techniques are working well for me. I will monitor and see if there are more ways to gain followers. Remember, post often, post meaningful content, and do not spam. Do not follow to many people, or you may get banned.
